Also known as Fjord Salmon or Salmon Trout, They have slightly better taste than Norwegian Salmon and have a less fishy odor. They are a better choice nutritionally since they have less cholesterol, fewer calories, and nearly the same amount of protein per serving. Steelhead also contains more omega-3 fatty acids and less sodium.

The size you get: The size of the fish to be used for your orders will be approx. 2 kg per fish.

Steelhead Salmon is also known as Rainbow Trout, & Fjord Salmon. It comes from the Trout family. However, It is very similar to the Norwegian Salmon and has orange meat.

It’s called Fjord because Fjord is a long, narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, as in Russia and other cold countries, typically formed by the submergence of a glaciated valley.

Health Benefits

Nutritionally, Steelhead salmon is considered to be healthier than normal Salmon. Steelhead contains higher amounts of essential Omega-3 fatty acids, (EFAs) and vitamins than Salmon. A 3-oz serving of a steelhead salmon, also contains roughly 645 IU of Vitamin D and 3.5mcg of Vitamin B-12.

Flavor Profile

Steelhead salmon are fabulous fish! They have orange flesh like Norwegian salmon, but the flavor is milder like a cross between salmon & trout. The flesh has medium flakes and a tender texture. For most people, Salmon trout may taste better than Norwegian salmon.

luckily, it doesn’t have as much of that “fishy” flavor that some people shy away from, and it can be served hot or cold.

The Steelhead salmon available for sale at Anbar Fish is sourced from Russia.

They are found in the narrow, deep inlet of the sea between high cliffs, as in Russia and other cold countries, typically formed by the submergence of a glaciated valley.

Steelhead salmon are seagoing and inhabit various rivers along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to California, and from Japan to the Kamchatkan Peninsula.  “Summer-run Steelhead salmon” migrate between May and October.  “Winter-run Steelhead salmon” migrate between November and April.

Catching Method

Wild Salmon Trout is caught usually gillnets and hand lines. However farmed Salmon Trout is easy to fish from the farm.

Physical Attributes

Head blunt, jaw short – does not extend past the eye. Distinct dark spots on dorsal fin. Square-shaped tail fin with radiating pattern of spots. Often has reddish stripe along sides, gill cover reddish.


Steelhead salmon tend to be more silvery than the freshwater Rainbow form. Lake and stream dwellers tend to be lighter as well. River dwelling Steelhead salmon are generally darker and more brilliant.

In all habitats, the backs vary from blue or green to a yellow-green or brown. They always have dark spots on their heads, backs, bellies, and across their dorsal fins and cadula fins, a famed attribute of true trout.


On average, the Steelhead salmon size range is 1 to 4 kg per fish. However, other sizes are also occasionally available. The standard size supplied by Niwan Seafood is approx. 2 kg.

Steelhead salmon can be cooked in a variety of ways such as baking, frying, searing, grilling, etc. Make sure not to overcook it so that its nutrients can be retained.
